Project to restore lighting systems destroyed by Dec. 2021 tornado

PADUCAH, Ky. (September 20, 2023) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans work zone lane and load width restrictions at the Interstate 69/KY 80 Mayfield Exit 21 Interchange at the southwest edge of Mayfield starting Monday, September 25, 2023.

This lane and 10 ft. maximum load width restriction for I-69 northbound traffic and 13.5 ft. maximum load width on the ramp connecting KY 80 westbound to I-69 northbound is to allow restoration of high mast roadway lighting at the interchange.

This lane and load width restriction is expected to remain in place through October 3, 2023.

Davis H. Elliot Company has been ramping up work at the interchange this week.

Motorists should be alert for vehicles and personnel along the work zone and be prepared to encounter flaggers controlling traffic flow from time to time to allow material deliveries to the site.

This is part of ongoing efforts to restore lighting systems and traffic signals that were destroyed by the December 2021 tornado. Contractors have been awaiting arrival of metal poles and electrical equipment required to restore lighting systems and signals.

As part of the effort, Jay's Electric is working at various intersections in downtown Mayfield to prepare for restoration of traffic signals and beacons along U.S. 45 in the court square area. Motorists should be alert for intermittent work zones and intersection closures to facilitate signal reconstruction.

Many of the intersections in downtown Mayfield have functioned as ALL-Way Stops since traffic signal control systems and supports were destroyed by the December 2021 tornado. Signage will continue to control traffic flow until the new traffic signals are ready to be placed into service.

In addition to starting work to restore high-mast lighting at I-69 Mayfield Exit 21, Davis H. Elliot Company also has a contract to restore lighting at the I-69/KY 348 Benton Exit 42 Interchange and the I-69/KY 91 Princeton Exit 79 Interchange.

The electrical work was expected to start during the 2022 construction season. However, it was delayed by supply-line material shortages.

The contractors and KYTC District 1 will attempt to provide timely updates.
