Repairs to pony truss bridge over Obion Creek to take about 3 weeks to complete
PADUCAH, Ky. (February 1, 2024) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans an extended closure of KY 58 at the Obion Creek Bridge in Hickman County starting Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
KY 58 has been restricted to a 3-ton load limit with one-lane traffic on the Obion Creek Bridge at the 4.92 mile marker since January 21, when inspectors found deterioration of floor beams on the structure.
Engineers have developed a repair plan that will require an extended closure of the bridge starting promptly at 9 a.m., CST, on Tuesday. The bridge is expected to remain closed to all traffic for about 3 weeks.
There will be no marked detour. Passenger vehicles may self-detour via KY 1300, KY 123 and KY 1826. Trucks should seek an alternate route appropriate for the vehicle's gross weight.
The closure is located along KY 58 between KY 1772 and KY 1540 - about halfway between Clinton and Columbus.
The Obion Creek Bridge has a 30 ft. pony truss main span that opened to traffic in 1929. It was previously posted with a 20-ton load limit before being lowered to 3-tons. Approximately 575 vehicles travel this section of KY 58 in an average day.
The repair project has a target completion date of February 27, 2024.
KYTC District 1 will attempt to provide a timely update when the KY 58 Obion Creek Bridge is able to reopen to traffic.
