South Fulton High School Lady Devils District Champs; Regional crown in sight

South Fulton’s Lady Red Devils conquered the first round of semi-finals play on Monday, May 13, continuing their previous week’s trend of denying their opponents a single run, this time, beating Bradford’s Lady Bulldogs, 12-0 in five innings. The win allows the Lady Devils to advance closer to a state tournament appearance, for Head Coach Curt Lee, who will close out his softball coaching career when the 2024 season concludes.

The Lady Devils face off with Halls Wed., May 15 at 4 p.m. in the Regional Tournament Championship, at Halls.

The Lady Devils beat a well-worn path home May 13 in the first inning, scoring seven runners, plus one in the third, and picking back up the pace in the fourth inning, with four runs.

Maddie Gray scored three times for South Fulton, #3 Gore, Abbi McFarland, Piper Lusk scored twice each, and a run a piece was credited to #2 Gore, Caroline Barclay, and Gabi Long.

Lexie Lee was three for three at bat for the Lady Devils, and had an RBI in the game. Lusk was two for three, as was Gray, and #2 Gore was two for four. #3 Gore and McFarland each got a hit. McFarland had three RBIs and Barclay, two.

Pitching duties were shared by Gray, who was on the mound for four innings, and Barclay pitched for one. Gray allowed four hits, and struck out five, while Barclay struck out two.

For Bradford, C. Copous gave up 11 hits and all 12 runs from South Fulton, striking out three. Al Glisson, C. Graves, B. Bailey and K. Miller all had a hit for the Lady Bulldogs.

South Fulton High School’s Lady Red Devils shut out Greenfield Lady Jackets, Dresden’s Lady Lions and Union City’s Lady Tornados last week, and then beat Union City a second time, to claim the District crown May 10.

The Lady Devils advanced to Regional semi-finals May 13, on their way to capture the Regional Championship scheduled for May 15.

On May 6, Caroline Barclay was on the mound for the Lady Devils, and struck out 10 Greenfield batters in five innings of play.

Barclay had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run in the matchup, with Maddie Gray recording two hits, three RBIs and two runs.

#3 Gore scored 4 runs for SF, #2 Gore scored twice. Hadley Barnes crossed the plate once for the Lady Devils.

Anna Gore, Aubree Gore and Lexie Lee all had hits in the game.

It was more of the same the next night, May 7, as the Lady Devils shut out the Union City Lady Tornadoes, 7-0.

Maddie Gray was the South Fulton pitcher, striking out two batters, allowing a single hit.

#2 Gore scored 2 runs, and #3 Gore, Barclay, Abbi McFarland, Gabi Long and Hadley Barnes each scored 1 run.

Hits were recorded by Barclay, #3 Gore, Gray, McFarland and Piper Lusk.

K. Robinson had the only hit for Union City. A. Carr and M. Smith shared the mound for the Lady Tornadoes, with Carr allowing 2 hits and 3 runs, and Smith, 3 hits and 4 runs. Both pitchers struck out 2 batters.

The Lady Devils score a lone run in the sixth inning against Dresden’s Lady Lions May 9, but one run was all it took to take the win, 1-0.

Lady Devils Maddie Gray, Hadley Barnes and Abbi McFarland all had hits for South Fulton, with Gray scoring the run.

Gray was on the mound, striking out 4 batters and giving up one hit.

For Dresden, E. Stafford struck out 8 batters, giving up the run and 3 hits. G. Adams had the hit for Dresden.

In the only game of the week the Lady Devil defense allowed a run, May 10, South Fulton beat Union City 9-5, for the District Championship.

Union City took a 2-1 first inning lead, while inning two stalled for both competitors, but a 4-run third inning for the Lady Devils, followed by 2 runs scored in the fourth, and one each in the fifth and sixth, clinched the win.

Union City did score a run in innings four, five and six.

Gray was the winning pitcher for South Fulton, allowing 5 hits and the same number of runs, while striking out two.

#3 Gore had three hits and scored 3 runs for the Lady Devils, while #2 Gore scored 3 runs and had a hit.

Gray scored once and had two hits, Abbi McFarland had a hit and a run, Gabi Long scored a run, and Hadley Barnes recorded a hit in the win.

Caroline Barclay also had a hit for the Lady Devils, with Piper Lusk having a hit and Lexie Lee, recording two hits.

For Union City, M. Smith was on the mound, allowing 12 hits and 9 runs.

M. Theobald, E. Qualls, M. Smith and A. Carr scored for Union City.
