Fancy Fannie’s Bakery town’s ‘icing on the cake’

November 22, 2024

Downtown Fulton got a lot sweeter eight years ago, when Fancy Fannie's Bakery moved in at 422 Lake St.

At the time Carolyn Byassee and her daughter, Samantha Verkuillen, decided to open their business, and were joined by Byassee's granddaughter and Verkuillen's daughter, Brittany Stepp, they believed Lake Street was a great location in the Twin Cities, only minutes away from home. They live in South Fulton.

Brittany enjoys crafts in her spare time, but her decorated cakes and cookies are a true craft in their own right. Brittany's sister, Allison Verkuilen also assists at Fancy Fannie's Bakery.

The hours of operation are Wednesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. They are closed Sunday through Tuesday. The telephone number is 270-208-1062, and the email is fancyfannie's422@gmail.comm.

A fact about Fancy Fannie's, which may not be widely known, is that the business was actually named after Brittany and Allison's great-grandmother, who is Samantha's grandmother and Carolyn's mother, Fannie Lee.

"We are small and family owned and operated," Brittany said, emphazing that four generations of women has played a part in the success of the business.

The easiest part of being a small business, Brittany said, is enjoying the support and loyalty from repeat customers, who trust us enough to come back again and again, for us to serve them.

The hardest part of being a small business, thy said, is competing with the big box companies.
