Fulton Leader

• Representing the Connell family of Fulton, Mrs. James Connell, Steve Connell, Tim Connell and Harold Connell acknowledged Tennessee Trusted CC, ridden by Jimmy McConnell, winner of the two-year-old Walking Horse Open Class and winner of the James Connell Memorial Challenge Trophy, during the Fulton Tourism Commission third annual horse show.

• Plans were in full swing for Weekend at Pontotoc’s Barbecue Cook-Off set for the weekend of Sept. 14-16, coordinated by Linda Dacus, for the Tourism Commission. A highlight of the Weekend At Pontotoc event will be a Community Millennium aerial photo, where the public will gather at Pontotoc Park, for a photo by William Mitchell, courtesy of local pilot Lenny Hohlbein.

• Obion County Schools’ calendar listed opening work day as Aug. 4 and first day of classes as Aug. 9 while Fulton Independent Schools’ calendar listed students’ first day to return to class as Aug. 2.

• Four students claimed scholarships from Murray State University, including 2000 Fulton High School graduates, Shelethia Bransford, Terry Tidwell and Katrina Vancleve, as well as 1997 FHS graduate, Christina Moody.

• Obion County Schools and the Obion County Board of Education invited the public to a retirement reception to honor local School Board member Johnny Jones, for his 24 years of service.

• Fulton County High School Football Coach Mike Hayden instructed his defensive line during penetration and pursuit drills, in preparation for the 2000 football season, as FCHS Pilots Justin Campbell and James Walker went head to head during practice.

• Fulton Furniture and Appliance on Walnut Street in Fulton was the Chamber of Commerce Business of the Week.

• Obion County Commissioner Charles Reams nominated Larry Henderson of South Fulton to fill the unexpired term of Tom Dame, from the Commission, to represent South Fulton, District 1. The full commission approved the appointment.

• Reggie Woolf, son of David and Denise Woolf, hit a hole in one on the 18th green of Fulton Country Club’s Junior Golf tournament.

• Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced plans to host a public meeting Aug. 31 at Fulton’s Pontotoc Community Center, for discussion on a proposed plan for I-69.

• Jennifer “Jenny Lynn” Melton, 16, of South Fulton, daughter of Jim and Tammy Melton performed at “On Broadway In Paducah”.

• Playing at the Cine Theater in Martin, Tenn. was Space Cowboy, Coyote Ugly, Hollow Man and Nutty Professor 2, the Klumps.

• Vincent Yates, son of Jason and Lisa Yates, was honored on his second birthday with a Blues Clues themed party.

• John Lane and Jennifer McConnell of South Fulton, Obion County Farm Bureau’s Young Farmers of the Year winners, were honored at the Tennessee State Young Farmers Conference.

• A ribbon cutting ceremony for new playground equipment at South Fulton Elementary School was conducted, with Obion County Schools Director of Schools Donna Neblett, SFES Principal Dale Hollowell, South Fulton P.T.O. President, Teresa Wright and Vice-President Scarlett McKinney on hand for the ceremony. The P.T.O. facilitated fund raising efforts to purchase the new equipment.

• Twin Cities Youth League Senior Girls champions were recognized in a photo of Coaches Jimmy Wiggins, Craig Pirtle, and team members Kari Gordon, Casey Curlin, Danielle Hicks, Emily Akers, Jade Wiggins, Morgan Mitchell, Mallory Rickman, Sara Smith, Krista Pirtle and Amber Zickefoose.

• The City of Fulton received $3,396 in Area Development Funds for renovations to Pontotoc Park community center. On hand for the presentation of the check was Rep. Charles Geveden, Fulton Mayor Elaine Forrester and Fulton City Manager Brian Hightower.
