FREE SMOKE ALARMS OFFERED BY FULTON FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Fulton Fire Department and Red Cross have partnered together to install free smoke alarms for local families ,vulnerable to home fires in the City of Fulton.
The project is part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign aimed at reducing fire deaths and injuries across the country.
"When I went into the local schools in October to present “Fire won't wait. Plan your escape” I was surprised and concerned with the feedback I received from the students and parents regarding smoke alarms. I have heard numerous stories about families in Fulton who do not have a smoke alarm or a working smoke alarm in their residence. I knew I needed to act quickly and reach out to local partners. It is imperative everyone has a working smoke detector," Fulton Fire Chief Jeremy Martin said.
Chief Martin noted most people are engaged with more baking and cooking than usual this time of year, and many have installed Christmas trees, lights and other plug-in decorations that require extra fire prevention care.
"Having smoke detectors installed around the holidays is vital, he said.
At a minimum, smoke alarms need to be placed on every level of the home. Ideally, it is best to have smoke alarms in each sleeping room, as well as in the hallway outside each sleeping area.
Fulton residents who need assistance in obtaining one alarm per household may call Fulton Fire Department headquarters at 270-472-1422 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to schedule an appointment for free smoke alarm installation. Quantities are limited.
During the home visits for installation, Fulton Fire Department will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.
